Which sizes are official?
The table below lists the main networks, the size this site uses for each, and whether that number comes from the platform itself. Where a help page does not name a size, the table says so and suggests a general square that works well on most sites. Open a platform’s tool page from the last column to crop your photo with that size already selected.

Why there is no single answer
Each company decides how it shows profile photos, and they rarely say the same thing. Some publish a range of accepted sizes and a file limit. Some describe only how small the picture appears on screen. Many say nothing about pixels at all. A cheat sheet that lists one exact size for every network is usually guessing.
What they all have in common is that they show the photo as a small circle and resize your upload to fit. So a sharp, well-framed square will look good almost everywhere.
What a few platforms do publish
LinkedIn’s help accepts photos from 400 by 400 up to 7680 by 4320 pixels, under 8 MB, as PNG or JPG. YouTube says a channel picture is shown at 98 by 98 pixels and can be up to 15 MB, and a separate page gives 800 by 800 for official artist channels. Discord, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp, and X explain how to change the photo but do not name a pixel size on the pages we checked.
A safe default when no size is given
When a platform is silent, a medium square, such as the general recommendation in the table, is a practical choice. It is sharp on a profile page, small enough for any upload form, and easy for the site to shrink for lists and comments. Avoid uploading a tiny image, which will look blurry, or a huge camera original, which may be rejected or take a long time to upload.
Framing matters more than pixels
A huge photo with the face near the edge looks worse than a modest one with the face in the middle. The circle hides the corners, and the picture is often shown at the size of a fingernail. Center the face, keep the eyes a little above the middle, and leave a bit of space above the head.
Check the small previews in the circle profile picture maker before you download. If you cannot recognize the person at the smallest size, zoom in.
Choosing the best size for circle profile picture use across several accounts
If you want one file for every account, make it a sharp square of a medium size and frame it for the smallest place it will appear. That single file will usually work everywhere. Make a separate version only when one network has a firm rule, such as LinkedIn’s size and file limits, or a different style, such as a channel logo instead of a face.
File type and file weight
PNG and JPG are accepted almost everywhere. PNG keeps a clear background around the circle, which matters on websites and slides. JPG is smaller and fine for social networks, which add their own background. Animated pictures follow special rules on some networks, so use a still image unless the platform says otherwise.
Keeping the chart up to date
Platforms change their help pages from time to time. Each row links to the page it is based on, so you can check the latest wording yourself. The same data is available as a download if you want to use it in your own team guide.
Why sharp matters more than big
Every network shrinks your upload to fit its layout. A clear, well-focused photo stays crisp when it is reduced, while a blurry one stays blurry no matter how many pixels it has. If you only have a soft photo, a larger file will not help. Take a new photo in good light instead.
For the same reason, do not enlarge a tiny picture before uploading. Stretching a small image adds pixels but no detail. A fresh photo taken on any recent phone in good daylight is almost always sharp enough for a profile picture, even after the circle trims the corners.
Square, circle, or rectangle?
Most networks ask for a square and add the circle themselves. If you upload a rectangle, they usually take the middle and cut the rest, which can push the face off center. A square upload with the face in the middle gives you the most control. A round PNG works too, as long as the network does not crop it again.
Profile photos for teams and companies
When a whole team updates its photos, agree on one size and one framing so every face looks consistent across the company chat, email, and website. Share a short guide with the chosen size, an example photo, and a link to the cropper. Matching photos make a team page look organized and help new colleagues recognize each other.
Checking the result after you upload
After you set the new picture, look at it in a few places: your profile page, a comment, a chat, and a list of members or followers. The same photo can look different in each one. If the face looks too small or cut off anywhere, return to the editor, zoom in a little, and upload again.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best size for circle profile picture uploads?
Use the size the platform names. When it names none, a sharp medium square works well on most sites.
Why are some sizes marked as a general recommendation?
The platform’s help page did not publish a pixel size, so the chart suggests one instead of inventing an official number.
Does a bigger photo always look better?
No. Framing matters more. A centered face in a medium file beats a huge photo with the face off to one side.
Should I upload a circle or a square?
Most networks expect a square and add the circle themselves. A square with the face centered is the safest upload.
Can I download the chart?
Yes. The same table is available as JSON and CSV files.
Which file type should I use?
PNG or JPG. PNG keeps a clear background; JPG gives a smaller file.
